For the ninth project in his ongoing Plexus series, artist Gabriel Dawe has used his trademark materials – thread and fibres – to prove how fashion and architecture are related.
The Plexus pieces use thread to explore and reflect upon the complicated construction of gender and identity. Dawe further explains how Plexus shows how fashion and architecture both function to protect individuals.
‘By taking the main component of clothing – sewing thread – and generating an architectural structure with it, scale and material are reversed to create a new construction that no longer shelters the material needs of the body,’ he says. ‘Instead, it creates something symbolic of the non-physical structures humanity needs to survive as a species.’
